Situated on a historic fruit-packing corridor in Loomis, the cafe is snuggled up against the gorgeous High Hand Nursery in an all-glass atrium filled with potted magnolia trees and vibrant tulips. Sun-flooded and airy, the High Hand Cafe serves wholesome, earnest food devoid of fanciful garnishes or esoteric ingredients. This is simple, belly-pleasing fare, from the fresh albacore tuna melt and spinach salad (with local Asian pears and toasted hazelnuts) to the wood-fired oven pizzas (try the chicken with fresh basil pesto pizza) and the rotisserie pork loin with organic chard and rosemary mashed potatoes. At lunch, sandwiches seem to be the most popular menu items, and range from a fresh roasted turkey with cranberry cream cheese (sold out by noon the day we visited) to a slow-roasted barbecue pork sandwich. Salads are bountiful (don’t miss the white bean salad with grilled prawns) and the housemade soups are also a big seller. If you dine in the evening, you may be lucky enough to get a seat at the outdoor brick oven, where you can sip a glass of wine while watching the chef cook pizzas. High Hand gets packed quickly—Loomis residents have embraced this cafe with fervor, so be sure to make reservations when you can. And do make time before or after your meal to stroll through the High Hand nursery, surely the most fetching and strikingly designed nursery in Placer County. Wind chimes tinkle in the breeze, a tabby nursery cat licks his paws as he curiously observes the visitors, tall trees provide delicious shade on hot days, and there’s even a koi pond with darting, jewel-like fish that will fascinate your kids. High Hand Cafe (and Nursery) are well worth the trip to Loomis from just about anywhere in the Sacramento region. * Note: The café also has a to-go area, where you can run in and quickly order many of the menu items to take home. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: High Hand offers brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. After watching Peter Pan we wanted to fly. All it took was believing, a little bit of pixie dust by way of our Mother's gold crafting glitter and our back yard swing set. We would sprinkle the gold glitter over each other's heads proceed to the swing and go as high as the chains would allow then jump. At the highest arch we’d stretch into the magic of believing with all our heart and hoped it would send us sailing into the sky sneaking away from the implacable enemy of gravity.

Haven't you had those times in life? Where you imagined stretching your arms out to the very limit and flying perfectly, magically through the air and clouds, threading your way with perfect skill between tree trunks, dipping through avenues of snow-white cherry trees and down, down, down into giddy valleys of wild blue flowers? Or magically galloping on the chestnut back of a horse that doesn’t need to be guided and never grows tired rushing on and on, never missing his footing.

It seems almost impossible to find plain untrammeled magical delight these days. I have to admit I have been missing tumbling into unleashed pure delight myself. So, when we booked Daryl the Magician’s Magician of course I was freely delighted about his coming. Because I was able to jump back to a time when magic was not to far from reality and lots of things where absolutely hard to believe I had just saw with my own eyes!

Imagine a man handling cards with a gentle grace, coaxing such startling effects from them that even the most experienced will be flummoxed. All flying insects will die. Trees will loose their leaves and appear to die. Birds must either migrate or die. This is the worst thing that ever happened,” said the sobbing weatherman.

Scratching our heads wondering, we revisited the Conservatory blueprints. It was created as a smart building. To begin with, it has radiant floor heating, hot-water tubes buried underneath the floor. The invisible waves of thermal radiation rise from below, warm up objects they touch and then radiate that captured heat. The air temperature remains constant & comfortable, because the surrounding surfaces aren’t stealing warmth.

Next, when the temperature rises, the rooftop will open, pulling the warm air that builds inside outdoors. It will close automatically when the Conservatory returns to a comfortable temperature. Additionally, paneled shutters will automatically close to provide optimal shade when the sun is too strongly shining and automatically open when the sun is better blocked.

Yet, when asked if there was any indication this cooling anomaly might stop amid the comfortable temperature of the room, Madkooky said “I think there is no end in sight to this bizarre cooling in the Conservatory. However, it’s unclear at this juncture.”

Just as we thought we’d be spending a lifetime trying to figure this thing out, a veritable stranger nailed our problem with a T-shirt they were wearing that said “do nothing when nothing works.”

Perfect! Now we can get to work on our weekend sale in the nursery.

November 21-23, Friday, Saturday and Sunday all our Japanese Maples will be on sale for 30% off. This sale is an ideal opportunity to browse a large selection of Japanese Maples that are in full splendor!

Again, November 21-23, Friday, Saturday and Sunday all our Japanese Maples will be on sale for 30% off.

The Nursery is also in its final weekend for the 4-flag Blow-out sale. Sunday, November 23rd will be the final day to take total advantage of beautiful plants discounted at ridiculously rare prices -- perfect for adding color and shape to your existing garden or landscape.

As a reminder:

YELLOW = $25
GREEN=$50
BLUE = $150
ORANGE=$100

Now, the math: a YELLOW Flag plus an ORANGE Flag price is … $125 ($25 + $100 = $125).

Here we go again (just in case); should there be a GREEN Flag and a BLUE Flag the sale price is … $200 ($50 + $150 = $200).

We look forward to serving and spending time with you. Highs in the mid 70s. Please don’t pass the meteorologist hat we’re much too awesome with plants. Which brings us directly to our topic: Saturday November 15th 10am-10:30am; 11am-11:30 am; 12noon-12:30pm.

We will be having three (read: 3), half-hour (read: half of 60-mintues) walking tours of the HIGH-HAND Nursery. The Japanese Maples are in their fall splendor. Heavy branches dripping with stunning yellow, gold, red, rosy orange and residual green - their colors are astonishing!

These half-hour tours will be entertaining, approach the Chinese origins of the Japanese maple and other noteworthy topics. How to appropriately prune, properly water, discover any deep depression signs and finally any individual and ongoing failures to grow less than 1 inch per year. These will be done on a case-by-case basis.

So, how do you get on the list for any one of these tours before they completely fill up? That, frankly, is a stumper (read: pun intended). We know. We previously wrote something different and please, give us a moment to explain.

As you are well aware, or at least we hope, Thanksgiving is just around the corner. And, we have been working towards a common goal with some Thanksgiving turkey. Friday-- when the email was sent with the WRONG dinner times -- we were smack in the middle of sampling some super moist turkey.

Well, we don’t want to get you too bogged down in details, so we’re going to leave it to one word: tryptophan. Tryptophan helps the body produce B-vitamin niacin, which, in turn, helps the body produce serotonin, a remarkable chemical that acts as a calming agent in the brain and played a key role in our feeling sleepy and pushing the email send button much, much too soon.

So, let’s just catapult over the high grade tryptophan turkey thing for a moment and reiterate the Café & Conservatory dinner hours. Again,

Service begins at: 5:30 pm
Days Dinner will be served: Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Beginning November 20th
Closed Thanksgiving Day

Because at this point, it’s really all about clearing things up, getting our small square of carpet out and lying down for a while.
